If you’re here seeking a remedy for an upcoming hair drug test, stick with it here for a few minutes and read on down the page. There is a section called ‘Cleansing the Hair’ and a resource available for a process that is generally considered reliable to get you over the hump with that hair test.
Meanwhile, we’ve tried to put together a bunch of information here to help you better understand what you’re up against. So, thanks for visiting. We’re glad you’re here.
Your Hair Carries a Record of anything You’ve Ingested
A hair follicle drug test allows for drugs to be detected in the body long after they have been used. The drugs get into the blood and the blood vessels. This allows them to get filtered through the hair. This means that months after you have used such drugs, there can still be telling signs that you have done so. In fact, the duration of time that has passed since such use can be determined by the growth of the hair and where in the hair it is detected. Closer to the roots means more recent use.
This type of testing involves the removal of anywhere from 50 to 80 strands of hair at the base. At least 1 inch of hair is necessary. If a person doesn’t have long enough hair, then the use of body hair from other locations including the chest, face, or underarms can be used for the hair drug test.

Once the location of the hair to be collected is decided upon, then it is twisted into a bundle. The hair should be twisted and offer at least ¼ of an inch in overall diameter. If the hair is coming from the head, the middle part of the back of it is the best place to gather it to prevent bald spots that are evident. The cut hair is placed into a collection tube that will hold the hair in its original display.
How to Pass a Hair Follicle Drug Test
It must first be understood that drug metabolites in your blood go everywhere in your body –including your hair follicles. Metabolites in your hair are –in your hair, not on the surface of it. Attempts to cleanse your hair are effective to the outside surface, not the interior. Damaged hair loses some percentage of detectable metabolites.
See ‘Spanish Study’ below.
There are methods that have been utilized as a desperate measure to try and cleanse the hair before a drug test. Some claim success. The prevailing notion is it can’t hurt and it might help.
The length of time that you have been using drugs, the dose, the frequency of use, and what specific drugs are involved can all be variables that affect how successful these remedies end up being for the individual.

Hair Follicle Drug Test | A Spanish Study
A Spanish study done in 1997 tested hair samples collected from people who had bleached or colored their hair -and, had admitted similar drug use prior to collection of samples. The samples were analyzed for degree of damage, divided into treated and untreated samples and then analyzed for cocaine, cannabis, opiates and nicotine.
In all cases, the treated hair contained lower concentrations of drugs than the untreated samples. The differences ranged from 40%- 60%. The difference for morphine was higher than 60%, while for THC and nicotine the difference was 30%.
The differences depended upon the degree of hair damage and also the type of cosmetic treatment. Bleaching hair was more effective in reducing the drugs residue than coloring. [Instituto Nacional de Toxicología, Sevilla, Spain, Int J Legal Med. 1997;110(3):159-63].
The Society for Hair Testing
The Society of Hair Testing is an international organization that delves into topics related to legal aspects of hair testing, recommending criteria for getting positive results, the relationship between the amounts of drugs consumed and drug concentration in the hair -and other diverse data on hair testing.
A review of the Spanish study Abstract and the Hair Testing Society’s statements (links above) may lead to the fair assumption that if you bleach your hair, the damage will reduce the amount of detectable metabolites in your hair. What you don’t know is whether the reduction will be enough to get you through the test unscathed. Therefore, one must always assume the risk of detection is always present.
Cleansing Your Hair
If you are in a place in your life where you are being subjected to a hair drug test and can reasonably assume the test will reveal substances that wouldn’t be in your best interests -and feel as if you have nothing to lose right now … here is a procedure for thoroughly washing your hair (that is considered reliable) using apple cider vinegar and other over-the-counter items.

U.S. Dept. of Transportation and Commercial Drivers
During the summer of 2012, the U.S. Congress directed the Department of Transportation to create a new database consisting of all commercial drivers who are known to have failed a drug and / or alcohol test.
In early December 2012, the DOT issued a warning to truckers that the new marijuana laws in Washington and Colorado don’t give them freedom to toke up in those states.
Most recently, some republican congressmen want the DOT to implement a pilot program to study and determine whether the U.S. federal government can legally require commercial drivers to submit to hair testing to screen for drugs. To widely held belief is that current drugs testing protocol is too easily manipulated.
Hair testing, on the other hand, is not.
