Urine Drug Tests and Creatinine

You have to be very careful when it comes to the use of creatine and drug testing.

Depending upon what you use and the ingredients it contains, the product may cause you to get a positive test result.

The use of creatine is often legal as it is a natural supplement. You can walk into any health food store and buy it.

Yet it can be frowned upon in various sports as a performance enhancer that isn’t allowed.

Before you go, see “How to use Home Drug Tests” video below.

Urine Drug Tests and Creatinine
Someone that has a positive test result has the right to contest it. They can say that they were only using creatine but that may still get them banned from the sport. At the very least, it casts a dark shadow over their performance and the results that they obtain after that. There will always be skeptics that wonder if they were using an illicit substance or not.

On the other side of that coin, some people actually benefit from the use of creatine when it comes to drug testing. The methods of drug testing out there continue to be more and more advanced than ever. As a result, it is harder and harder to get by with using anything that is being checked for. The use of creatine therefore could be negative against you in the end.

Creatine and Creatinine

Both are found naturally in our body.  It’s the creatinine you’ll be interested in if you want to pass a drug test.  The level of creatinine in your urine is an indicator of how well your kidneys are functioning.  When you drink copious amounts of water in an attempt to flush controlled substances from your system, the sample will have reduced amounts of creatinine.

What often happens with most of the advanced tests today is that they have various steps in place that check out the overall validity of the testing that is being conducted. For example, you may be drinking lots of fluids in an attempt to dilute what is in your system prior to the drug test. This can help to reduce the levels of creatinine in the urine. If the test checks for pH levels, gravity, nitrate levels, and aldehydes, then it could indicate you have been trying to cheat the results.

In fact, your creatinine levels could turn out to be too low during the drug test due to the diluting that you have been doing. This is a red flag that you have been up to something, and most of the time the person administering the test will label the result as inconclusive -which is the same as failing.  This is because your kidneys will naturally pass some levels of creatinine. If the test results aren’t close to a normal level – they are too high or too low – then you will fail the drug test.  You may, however, have a chance to re-test.  Maybe not.

    Hey Jack –

Here’s an article I put together about diluted urine and creatine and creatinine levels:

It might fill in some of the questions you have. Thanks for the inquiry.

I have been getting UA’s monthly for 9 yrs while in methadone program. Last week I was asked to sign a test result that stated a different creatine level. I never heard of this and the clinic said it is probably because I drink a lot of water and sports drinks. That it was no big deal. Now I’m not so sure?

Creatine is legal to use and yet the athletic governing bodies on every level still don’t have a proper way to screen athletes who are cheating and those that are using a perfectly normal substance. In my opinion it is the system that needs to change and we shouldn’t be the ones trying to adjust to a testing procedure that is flawed. All these rules that have no validity are so annoying.

So basically to be on the safe side, one shouldn’t use creatine. By chance creatine might lower the level of creatinine, but knowing how to make that happen isn’t an exact science. It’s too bad, because I was seeing some great results due to the use of creatine supplements. The fact that it’s a 50/50 deal though, it makes it not worth the risk.

Thanks for the note, Gavin –

It is a tangled web we weave, eh?

    Thanks for the note.

Cheating the test can be very tricky as it seems. You have to consider the ph level, creatinine, and nitrate levels and such. That’s a lot of things to consider before trying to beat a drug test. I smoke weed a few times a week and I also take creatine supplement to help with my weight lifting. I think my creatine taking just made things infinitely more complicated, so I’ll have to do a lot more research before I try beating the drug test.

Yeah. The labs have evolved. It’s tough to come up with
something they haven’t seen and can’t detect.

    Thanks for the note, Justin.
